He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald J. Benhardt and Lauretta Benhardt (Gardner). He is survived by: his wife Adele Benhardt (Casazza); his sons, Donald E. Benhardt, Jr. of North Brunswick and Jason Benhardt (Kelly) of Old Bridge; and his grandchildren, Leah, Gavin and Piper.

Benhardt was a member of the Civil War Heritage Foundation.
