He was predeceased by: his parents, Mario M. Garthe (Irene Garthe) and Irene Garthe (Warwick); and his brother John Garthe (Linda). He is survived by: his husband Thomas Koch; and his niece Casey Chambeau (Todd). He is also survived by extended family members and dear friends.

Visitation was held on Monday, January 6th 2025 from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM at the M. J. Murphy Funeral Home (616 Ridge Rd, Monmouth Junction, NJ 08852). A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, January 6th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the St. Augustine of Canterbury Church (45 Henderson Rd, Kendall Park, NJ 08824). An entombment was held on Monday, January 6th 2025 at 11:45 AM at the St. Gertrude Cemetery (53 Inman Ave, Colonia, NJ 07067).

“How do I summarize 60 yrs of friendship from that first chance meeting while we were both riding our bikes on Albert Ave, Milltown to our many day trips to Pt Pleasant Bch with his mom, to the weekend at Dingman's Falls in a cabin with my folks, to playing Backgammon at your apt during my Christmas break from college, to being Best Man at my wedding or our recent dinners with the three of us during my visits to NJ from Florida. Our friendship is permanently woven into the fabric of my memory.”
