He was predeceased by: his father Fred Thompson; and his wife Judith Thompson. He is survived by: his mother Alice Thompson of Pennsylvania; his daughters, Christy Thompson of Laurence, Melissa Thompson of Laurence and Jessie of Laurence; his son-in-law Jay Smith of Laurence; and his sisters, Wende (Sam Pickens) and Cheryl (Richard Lancaster). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren.
