He was predeceased by: his parents, Christina Gaffney and James Gaffney; his wife Terry; his siblings, James (Annamae), P. Donald (Lorraine) and Dorothy Milewski (Raymond); his brother-in-law Thomas Canning; and his nephew Stephen.

He is survived by: his sons, Brian (Linda), Ted (Theresa) and John; his sister Rose Canning; and his grandchildren, Michael, Katelyn (Jonathan Whitcraft), Megan, Marie, Sean, Faith Mary, Maeve and Matthew. He is also survived by his family and friends.
