He was predeceased by: his father David J. Heuwetter, Sr.. He is survived by: his wife Gerry Smith Heuwetter; his mother Barbara Heuwetter of Manhattan; his children, Allison Heuwetter and David J. Heuwetter III; and his significant other Erin Dempsey.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to: The Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society or the National Humane Society.
