He was predeceased by: his parents, Patrick Cooney and Mary Cooney; and his sister Catherine Gildea. He is survived by: his children, Joseph Cooney (Michele), Brian Cooney (Christy), Terry Cooney, Kevin Cooney and Sean Cooney; his stepchild Bernie Courtney; and his sister Alice Cozzolino. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Saint Peter's Prep in Jersey City or to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
