He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Jules Louis Smeets and Marie-Thérèse van Vyve; his wife Joan; his children, Jean-Pascal and Lucy Noëlle; his siblings, Jacques (Anne), Geneviève (Didier) and Anne France (Olivier); his nieces and nephews, Geoffroy (Amélie), Florence (Ashraf), Charlotte, Nathalie (Matti), Olivia, Alexis and Sophie; and his great-nephews, Scott, Jack and Victor. He was also cherished by cousins, colleagues, clients, and friends.
