He was predeceased by: his former wife Melanie Johnston; his son Michael Johnston; and his daughter-in-law Lois Tootill. He is survived by: his wife Rita Johnston; his sister Ruth Ann Brennan (Jim); his son James T Johnston Jr. (Tara); his stepchildren, Edward H Tootill (Betz), Nicholas J Tootill (Lois), Joan Hanna (Craig) and Johnny Abbonizio (Carmella); his grandchildren, Nicholas Tootill Jr. (Faye), Tara McPherson (Jessie), Jordan Johnston, Kamryn Johnston, James T Johnston III, Falyn Johnston and Giana Abbonizio; and his great grandchildren, Alexa, Jared Lyons, Eric, Mia, Nathan Tootill, Audrey and Jaxson Johnston. He is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held on Thursday, January 23rd 2025 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Friday, January 24th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Gardner Funeral Home - Runnemede (126 S Black Horse Pike, Runnemede, NJ 08078). A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 24th 2025 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Friday, January 24th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM at the St. Joseph's Cemetery (240 Lower Landing Rd, Blackwood, NJ 08012).
