He was predeceased by: his wife Winifred "Winnie" (Bryan); his parents, William John Canavan and Clara E. Canavan (Kirwin); and his siblings, William Canavan, John Canavan and Ann Tracy (Canavan).
He is survived by: his children, Margaret Wernsing (David R. Wernsing), Elizabeth Dunn (Steven Dunn), Joseph G. Canavan Jr. and Catherine Dunham (Robert Dunham); and his grandchildren, Matthew Dunn, Catherine Dunn, Kacie Dunham Carr (Keyton Carr), Alden J. Dunham, David J. Wernsing and Zoe Wernsing.
