He was predeceased by: his son Carl E Schmalbach; his parents, Jonathan Schmalbach and Ida May Schmalbach; and his brother William Schmalbach. He is survived by: his wife Lynn (Kapus); his daughter Jamie L Rossetti (Lenny); his grandchildren, Ava R Schmalbach and Jackson C Schmalbach; his sister Nancy Smith; and his sister-in-law Ruth E Hill. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
