He was predeceased by: his close friend Suzanne Orlando. He is survived by: his children, Robert F. Nelson, Jr. (Donna), Karen Y. Nelson (Don Morgan), Caroline D. Smith (Dennis Delgado) and Daniel J. Nelson (Lisa Chulsky); his siblings, Gail Swift and Albert Nelson, Jr.; and his friend Joe Orlando (Colleen). He is also survived by his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
