He was predeceased by: his parents, Ethel Schmalz and Roy Schmalz; his siblings, Leroy Schmalz, Richard Schmalz, Robert Schmalz and June Purcell; and his son Michael Schmalz.

He is survived by: his wife Margaret Esposito Schmalz; his children, Ronald (Sharon Schmalz) of Cranbury, NJ and Barbara (Steven Cornella) of Bridgewater, NJ; and his grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa, Nicole, Steven Jr. and Alyssa. He is also survived by great grandchildren.
