He was predeceased by: his wife Sarah Carpenter (Taylor); his parents, Flossie Carpenter (Eddy) and William Carpenter; his son James Lee Carpenter, Jr.; and his siblings, Cleo, William, Rose and Nathanial.
He is survived by: his children, Patricia Ann Carpenter, Mary Ann Carpenter, Bernice Vargas, Cynthia Carpenter and Roy Lee Carpenter; his stepson Tory Sanders; and his siblings, John E. Carpenter, Doretha Carroll, Florine Foster and Diana Carpenter. He is also survived by grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren, also cherished by his nieces, nephews, and friends.
