He was predeceased by: his wife Janet Austin Cheeseman; his children, Linnet Cheeseman Devlin and Matthew R. Anderson; and his friend Bertha Rushton. He is survived by: his children, James B. Cheeseman Jr. of Searsport, ME, Robin Cheeseman Staples of Liverpool, ME and Jill Anderson Pawlick of Plano, Texas.. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, four great grandchildren.
