He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Lillian M. Keefe and Leroy J. Cox; his sister Patti Kendall of Indiana; his niece Judith Rosegay; and his siblings, Richard, June Cox and Doris Gaedtke. He was also cherished by 9 foster children and countless animal companions.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Herbert's name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Pope Memorial Humane Society.
