He was predeceased by: his sister Nancy Nageldinger; and his son William O. Datthyn. He is survived by: his wife Susan Olney Datthyn; his daughter Susan Sylvester (George Sylvester); his grandchildren, Billy and Elizabeth; his pet Benny; and his daughter Sarah Fagan (Jonathan Fagan-Child).
