He was predeceased by: his parents, William and Nellie Butterworth (Perkins); his son David Butterworth; and his brother William Butterworth. He is survived by: his wife Beverly Butterworth (Boyle); his children, Kelly Abbott (Wayne) and Jeff Butterworth; his daughter-in-law Patricia Butterworth; and his siblings, Nellie McMillan, Frances Asbjornsen, Mary Curtis and Lenny McLaughlin. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jack Byrne Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
