He is survived by: his wife Jackie; his children, Heidi Bates, Shannon Alston of Virginia, Kaleigh and Picasso Bates of Hampstead; and his sister Cathy Matthews of Indiana. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild.

A private memorial will be held in the spring, and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a local food pantry.
