He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Doherty and Nora Doherty (Carr); his wife Arlene Reich; his son Brian Doherty; his granddaughter Jaime Santerre; and his sister Assumpta Marie Doherty.

He is survived by: his children, Kathleen Doherty and Frank; his daughter-in-law Martha Doherty; his grandsons, Joshua Santerre, Michael Doherty and Stephen Doherty; his great grandchild Lily Hammond; and his brother Charles Doherty of Lander. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
