He was predeceased by: his parents, John O. Gerdes and Tena Gerdes (Tjaden); and his sister Betty Jurgens (Delmer). He is survived by: his nephew Rick Jurgens (Vicky) of Wymore; his niece Nancy Coffey (Jim) of Omaha; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Nick, Samantha Thompson, Garrett Thompson (Cassidy Dixon) of Aurora, CO, Justice, Amanda Coffey, Lindsay Coffey of Omaha and Connor Coffey (Evann Martin) of Grimes, IA; and also, Adeline of Wymore and Landon of Omaha.
A memorial has been established to the Barneston American Legion #356 and the Immanuel (Stateline) Lutheran Cemetery.
