He was predeceased by: his parents, Vernon Mitchem and Catherine Mitchem (Worske); his wife Patricia Ele; his sister Gloria Brown; and his parents-in-law, Pat and Maxine Ele.

He is survived by: his siblings, Carolyn McNabb (Bill) and James Mitchem; and his siblings-in-law, Mary Vontz (Tom), Bob Ele and Ned Ele (Kim). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

He spent his later years courageously fighting Alzheimer's disease and was a resident of El Dorado Nursing Home in Trenton, Ne.
