He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas L. Birkel and Betty M. Birkel (Martin); his siblings, Virginia Birkel, Steve Birkel and Leo Birkel; his sister-in-law Betty Birkel; his niece Heather Birkel; and his nephew Matthew Birkel.
He is survived by: his siblings, Pat Brown (Kerwin) of Metamora, Marty Birkel (Susan) of Bellwood, Deb Litchfield (Jim) of Wakefield, Sandy Litchfield (Terry) of Windsor and Bob (Teresa) of Dwight. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
