He was predeceased by: his parents, William C. Downey and Bessie Downey; his sister Phyllis Smith; his nephew Ron Smith; and his sons, John and James.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Riley; his children, Brad, Tara McCormick (Robert) and Anne Liakos (George); and his grandchildren, Hunter McCormick, Ryan, Riley and Mackenzie Liakos.

A memorial has been established to the Scottsbluff YMCA.
