He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo McElwee and Fern McElwee (Randall); his wife Jo; his stepfather Lewis Haskin; and his sister Julialynn Butler.

He is survived by: his children, John (Paula McElwee), Mary (Walter Cline), Shannon (Les Kampbell) and Shelley (Dale Harvey); and his grandchildren, Amanda McElwee (Matt), Benjamin Cline (Jamie), Katie Eder (David), Titus Cline (Jaimee), Joseph Cline (Leslie), Bryan Kampbell (Aimee), Erin Kampbell, Lindsay Eisenmenger (Scott), Blaine Harvey (Krysta), Lacey Adamson (Clint) and Dylan Harvey. He is also survived by fifteen great-grandchildren.
