He is survived by: his wife Phyllis of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; his children, Pam Hammond (Lee) of Leland, Wendy Smith of Leland and Mark Smith (Kim) of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; his grandchildren, Lindsey Hammond (Josh Patterson) of Athens, Georgia, Kevin Hammond (Alina Suyama) of Mechanicsville, Adam Smith (Amber) of Lincoln, Cole Smith (Alyssa) of Gilbert and Mason Smith of Phoenix, Arizona; his great grandchildren, William Kooiker of Orange City, Iowa, Fletcher Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska and Weston Hammond of Mechanicsville, Virginia.; his siblings, Bob Smith (Phyllis) of Littleton, Colorado and Mary Ann McCuistion of Huntington Beach, California; his sisters-in-law, Julie Harris (Steve), Jill Apala (Jay) and Nicole Wohlgemuth (Kyle); and his nephew Mike Smith.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Don's honor be made in care of St. John's Lutheran Church or the American Lung Association.
