He was predeceased by: his parents, Dick Altena and Winifred Altena of Iowa; and his brother-in-law Rodney (Wanetta). He is survived by: his children, Desarie (Charles), Travis (Kelly), Brittany (Matthew) and Chelsea (Jordan); his wife Shelly; his sisters, Wanetta (Rod), Eunice (Dave), Joella (Rick), Lori (Rod) and Audrey (Michael); and his grandchildren, Cassandra, Aubrey, Mason, Jackson, Owen, Lauren, Megan, Tessa, Brianna, Xander, Corbin and Brycen. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

“To the family of Harley, please accept my sincerest condolences. I spent a good part of my childhood playing at Harley's childhood home in Ireton, Iowa only 3 blocks from my home. I was good friends with his sisters, Lori, Joella and Audrey. When I heard the news of circumstances surrounding his death, it saddened me even more. My daughters & Iexperienced the same with their dad. Some deaths are definitely more difficult to get past. My heart & prayer goes out to each & every family member..”
