He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth Johnson and Florence Johnson; his daughter Cherie Bartlett; his siblings, Lois Engdahl and Raymond; and his grandson Derek John Keithley.

He is survived by: his wife Sally Sass; and his children, Johnnie Johnson (Melinda), Tammie Baumert (Ron) and Angie Hauptman (Tim). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren.
