Gloria Jean (Nelson) Swanson Obituary
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Gloria Jean Swanson, age 77, of North Platte, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, at Centennial Park Nursing Home.
Gloria was born May 30, 1941, in Northfield, Minn., to Alvin and Erna (Meyer) Nelson. She graduated from high school in 1958 and became a flight attendant with Humboldt Inc. She married John W. Swanson in November 1977 in Arvada, Colo. The couple lived in Deckers, Colo., Thornton, Colo., and Stratton, Neb., where she was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Gloria moved to South Oak Manor in North Platte in 2017 following John’s death.
She was a homemaker and mother to seven children. She spent several years raising her grandson, Jaii, who is now 8 years old. She loved her kids and grandkids and enjoyed all of their activities. She liked watching Days of our Lives, leading the Frog Exercise program, and playing poker, UNO, and pitch with her many friends at South Oak Manor.
Gloria is survived by her children, Calvin of North Platte, Joe of Thornton, Colo., Michael of Lincoln, Neb., Amanda of Kearney, Neb., Nicole of McCook, Neb., and Jodie of Beaufort, S.C.; grandson, Jaii Swanson of McCook and eight other grandchildren; brother, Gene (Julie) Nelson of Mankato, Minn.; and sister/dear friend, Donna Bryant of Thornton; as well as other extended family members and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Swanson; son, Daniel G. Swanson; parents, Alvin and Erna Nelson; brother, Dean Nelson; and sister, Darlene Garson.
