He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman Schafer and Aileen Schafer (O'Conner); his brother Matt Schafer of Cathedral City, CA; his daughter Cheryl Nelson; his brother Larry; his sister-in-law Virginia Schafer; and his brothers, Ted Schafer, Paul Schafer and Leo "Roger" Schafer.

He is survived by: his wife LeeAnn Hannon of Kearney; his daughter Tammy Nelson of Sebastian, FL; his son-in-law Robert Nelson of Kearney; his grandchildren, Justin Nelson (Lindsey) of Lincoln, NE, Destinee Shearer (Matt) of Shenandoah, IA, Bailey Nelson (Jordan Isaak) of Orlando, FL and Ryan Nelson of Vero Beach, FL; his great grandchildren, Brantley and Kinley Shearer of Shenandoah, IA; his siblings-in-law, Joyce Schafer of Doniphan, NE and Francis Hannon (Connie) of Doniphan, NE; and his nieces and nephews, Staci Schafer (Marilyn) of Cathedral City, CA, Chad Schafer of San Francisco, CA, Steve Schafer (Mona) of Doniphan, NE, Jim Schafer of Doniphan, NE, Dan Schafer (Shelly) of Giltner, NE, Ann Rosfeld (Tim) of Callaway, NE, Frances Jr. Hannon (Janet) of Doniphan, NE, Cody Hannon (Kristen) of Doniphan, NE, Angela Harders (Mike) of Cairo, NE, Bonnie Jacobsen (Darren) of Grand Island, NE and Cassey Hannon (Megan) of Grand Island, NE. He is also survived by several extended family and friends.
