He was predeceased by: his parents, Niels Nielsen and Florence Nielsen (Essley); his former wives, Arlene Nielsen and Phyllis Nielsen; his siblings, Dean, Donzel, Darwin Nielsen, Leora Nelson, Lenora Smith, Lynette Baker and Lorraine Bartmess; and his brother-in-law Ike Homer Empfield.

He is survived by: his wife Bronte Nielsen of Kearney; his children, Troy Nielsen (Lisa) of Kearney and Loy Nyberg (Brett) of Bertrand; his stepdaughter Patti Johnson (Marlin) of Johnson Lake; his grandchildren, Dirk Trautman (Kami) of Lincoln, Kylee Wilken (Matt) of Bertrand, Matt Nielsen (Jenni) of Kearney, Makahla Krueger (Eric) of Kearney, Stephanie Knight (Jim) of Geneva, Chris Johnson (Brooke) of Henderson, NV, Chelsea Miller (Monte) of Kearney and Lindsay Ruma (Matt) of Omaha; his brother Donald Nielsen (Esther) of Laramie, WY; and his sisters-in-law, Diane Nielsen of Denver, CO and Karen Empfield of Stapleton. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

“I'm so sorry to hear about his passing. Even though I haven't seen him in many years, he was always Grandpa Darold. Spending summers and holidays at the house in Elwood and at at the Red Barn are some of my favorite childhood memories. He would smile, call me Sara-Bell; I would giggle and call him Grandpa-Bell. Sending love and light to you all during this time.”
