He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph R. Kulhanek and Sophie A. Kulhanek (Sindelar); his brother Joseph; and his sister-in-law Bernice Kulhanek. He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Vesely; and his aunt Elma Bart. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, a brother-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

He enjoyed woodworking, wood cutting, metalworking, farming, gardening, tending to the cattle, repairing bicycles for charity and going to casinos.
