She was predeceased by: her parents, Bernard E. Schmidt and Ruth M. Schmidt (Swanson); her siblings, Carol Conley (Harvey), Kay Evans, Ronald "Dutch" Schmidt, Don Schmidt, Bernard Schmidt, Raymond Schmidt and Milan Schmidt; and her grandson-in-law Justin Fisher.

She is survived by: her spouse Dennison Jackson "Punch" Freeland; her children, Steve Freeland of Fullerton, Nebraska, Terry Freeland (Beverly) of Atlanta, Mark Freeland (Patricia) of Kearney, Dave Freeland (Diane) of Holdrege, Tami Peltier (Greg) of Concordia, Kansas and Julie Lindstrom (Bryan) of Oxford, Nebraska; her daughter-in-law Linda Freeland of Loomis, Nebraska; her grandchildren, Travis Freeland (Katie), Tyler Freeland (Kalei), Micki Fisher, Cody Freeland (Tami), Lacie Wright (Kelly), Whitney Krienert (Cole), Kyle Freeland (Rylee), Tyler Dahl, Caitlin Dahl, Meagan Peters (Brett), Amanda Browitt (Jordan), Makaila Peltier and Maddison Peltier; her great grandchildren, Jada, Crew and Taylor Freeland; her grandchildren, Harper, Marshall Freeland, Jonah, Ridley Fisher, Hailey, Trevor Freeland, Lexie, Kallie, Tanner, Gunner Wright, Charlie, Oliver Krienert, Karter, Jennica, Tucker Freeland, Aubrey, Ava, Beckam Peters, Neveah and Bentley Browitt; her brother Leighton Schmidt (Janet) of Beaver City, Nebraska; and her siblings-in-law, Faye Peterson (Rod) of Gibbon, Nebraska, Beverly Braden of Kearney, Dennis Evans of Elwood, Nebraska and Larry Freeland (Sharon) of Franklin, Nebraska. She is also survived by many extended family members and friends.

A memorial has been established in Verlene's memory and kindly suggested to Industry Cemetery or Atlanta Methodist Church.
