He was predeceased by: his parents, John Charles Kahl and Mabel Marie Kahl (Brophy); his parents-in-law, Joseph and Merle Barnaby; and his siblings, Erwin Kahl, Clara Hunter (Norm), Valaria Burnosky (Danny), Bud Kahl, Bernice Kreitinger (Frank), Harry Begger, Roger Barnaby and Virgil Barnaby.

He is survived by: his wife Sherry Kahl of Hershey, NE; his children, Tana Jensen (Dennis Hahne) of Kulm, ND, Yvette Troyer of Hershey, NE, Stacey Kahl of Aurora, CO and Jared Kahl (Lauren) of Tucson, AZ; his son-in-law Kyle Troyer; his grandchildren, JD Troyer, Kyla Jensen, Ryce Troyer, Alexis Jensen, Xavian Geiger, Calie Troyer, Jaryn Geiger, Tucker Hahne, Nathaniel Kahl, Spencer Kahl and Nevaeh Troyer; his siblings, Elaine Begger of Beach, ND, Marcella Wiseman (James) of Beach, ND and Charles Kahl (Judy) of Wibaux, MT; his siblings-in-law, Adeline Kahl of Chanhassen, MN and Gary Barnaby of Wibaux, MT; and his caregiver Tammy Prock. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family has chosen to honor the memory of John by establishing a memorial scholarship.
