He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Thomsen and Edith Thomsen; and his brother John Thomsen. He is survived by: his wife Katrina Fahlin; his sister Donna Rehtmeyer (John); his niece Lindsey Vieselmeyer (Colt); his nephew Josh Rehtmeyer (Lisa); and his great-nephew Jake Rehtmeyer (Emily).

Throughout his life JJ enjoyed helping others and volunteered doing pet therapy, special Olympics, donating blood and working at horse shows.
