Backhaus; her children, Emily Ann Lyles (Wilson Lyles), Cherie Lynn Mahon (Jeff Mahon), Karen Kay Rudolph, Clayton Richard Backhaus, Chris Alan Backhaus, Clint Peter Backhaus and Scott Neal Backhaus; her grandparents, Gustav and Emilie Matschuk (Westphal) of Elkhorn; her great-grandparents, Robert W. and Jane Douglas (Haney) of Rural Elkhorn; her grandmother Elta Schainost of Gilead; her parents, Maxie Glenn and Etherl Douglas (Matschuk) of Elkhorn; her brother LaVerne Robert Douglas (Helen) of Malmo; her grandchildren, Calvin, Logan, Clayton Backhaus and Chris Alan (Katie); her children, Conor, Erin and Colin; her grandchildren, Natasha, Sasha, Sveta and Anna; her niece Jane Heck; and her nephews, Steve Douglas, Bill Douglas and David Douglas.

In 2001 she became a charter member of the Mouth of the Platte Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation and also participated in the Chapter's study groups and presented interesting talks on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
