He was predeceased by: his parents, Lester Bates and Gertie Bates (Coverdale); his stepson Danny Gatewood; his stepgranddaughter Stephanie Dahl; and his siblings, Howard and Elaine Navrkal.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Bates of Decatur; his daughters, Becky Fisher (Don) of Council Bluffs and Rita Flom (Rick) of Council Bluffs; his grandchildren, Matt, Chris, Jared and Michaela; his great grandchildren, Braxton, Jayden, Rylan and Olivia; his brother Robert Bates (Marilyn) of Des Moines, Iowa; and his stepdaughters, Diane and Peggy. He is also survived by many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
