He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruth Shadbolt (Reninger) and Harry Shadbolt; and his siblings-in-law, Ken, Lorren, LaVern, Barbara, Joyce and Edna.

He is survived by: his son Scott; his wife Opal; his daughter-in-law Kerry; his grandsons, Joshua and Samuel; and his sister Karen McClain. He is also survived by Numerous cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Dakota City United Methodist Church in Melvin's memory.
