Archie Ray Sawyer Obituary
October 3, 1936 - November 24, 2017 Rev. Archie Ray Sawyer, 81, resident of 2310 Ridge Road, husband of Ruth Brown Sawyer, passed away Friday, November 24, 2017, at his home. Born October 3, 1936, in Marion, he was a son of the late Archie and Pearl Chestnut Sawyer. He was a US Air Force Retiree with twenty four years of service and was also retired as a Mail Carrier from the US Postal Service and as a Church of God pastor.
He served as pastor of North Greenwood Church of God for seven years. A member of Durst Avenue Church of God he was also the former teacher of the Men"s Bible Class and served as a minister to NHC Healthcare of Greenwood for Durst Avenue Church of God Outreach for 37 years. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, he is survived by his wife of the home; four sons, David and wife Michelle Sawyer of Burwell, Nebraska, Mark and wife Sharon Sawyer of Colorado, Duane and wife Tammy Sawyer of Saginaw, MI, and Tony and wife Joyce Kelley of Greenwood; two daughters, Terri and husband Ricky Tipton of Hodges and Susan and husband Kevin Feasler of Belvedere, SC; twenty two grandchildren and twenty seven great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, John and wife Amy Tyler of Florence.
He is predeceased by a sister, Linda and her husband Stafford Fort. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Monday at Durst Avenue Church of God with Rev. Richard Earl Porterfield and Rev. Roy Thacker officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Andrew Kelley, Brian Raynal, Trenton Kelley, David Cooper, Larry Goldman and Jerry Barks.
Honorary escort will be members of Durst Avenue Church of God. The family is at the home on Ridge Road and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 2 to 4 Sunday afternoon. Memorials may be made to the Durst Avenue Church of God Building Fund, 300 East Durst Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649.
