He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert "Hidy" Bongers and Dorothy Bongers (Vandenberg); his sister Mary Lou Moser; his parents-in-law, Erick and Winifred Johnson; and his siblings-in-law, Oscar Kramp, Wilfred Ficken, Wilbert "Bud" Ficken, Wilma Kramp, Cleora Ficken and Wyona "Onie" Wagner.

He is survived by: his wife Ellen Johnson of Brainard; his children, John Bongers (Kim) of Brainard, Janice Benes (Roger) of Winterset, Joel Bongers (Lisa) of David City and Jennifer Hilger (Jeff) of Wahoo; his grandchildren, Cory, Nick Benes, Carynn, Leah Bongers, Zach, Harlie Bongers, Graeme and Ellese Hilger; and his siblings-in-law, Larry Moser, Howard Wagner and Jackie Ficken.
