He was predeceased by: his parents, George William and Esther Ellen Oakes (Waldren); and his son George Oakes. He is survived by: his wife Debra Widman; his sons, Kevin Oakes (Melissa) of Beatrice and Kenny Oakes of Beatrice; his grandchildren, Brianna Oakes, Vanessa Smith (Ryan), Sami Trauernicht (Lucas), Alyssa Oakes and Addalynn Oakes; his great grandchildren, Aubrey, Jaylin and Mia; and his siblings, Roy Wayne Oakes (Sarah), David Oakes, Richard Willis Oakes, Georgie Homer and Christina Ostlee. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Cottonwood Hospice in care of the mortuary.
