He was predeceased by: his parents, Lesley Berner and Laverta Berner (Rohlfs); and his father-in-law Bill Holscher. He is survived by: his children, Brandon Berner (Becca) of Syracuse and Chantelle Schroeder (Aaron) of Avoca; his grandchildren, Hadyn, Mason Berner, Jackson, Presley and Carter Schroeder; his siblings, Fred Berner (Phyllis), Steve Berner (Julie), Brenda Copley (Bill) and Betty Fries (Jim); his mother-in-law Shirley Honeycutt; and his siblings, Kim, Candy and Butch. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and friends.
His final act of kindness was donating his organs for pancreatic cancer research.
