He was predeceased by: his parents, George Ries and Gladys Ries; his grandparents, George, Emma Ries, Mary and John Pruss; his sisters, Marilyn Kruntorad and Janice Ries; his brother-in-law Wayne Kruntorad; and his father-in-law Harold Claussen Sr..

He is survived by: his wife Lin; his children, Bryan Slaymaker (Amber) of Atkinson, Brandi Mitchell (Jason) of Atkinson, Lisa Alder (Shawn) of Atkinson, Jenni Ruda (Dan) of Atkinson, Jamie Mitchell (Dirk) of Atkinson and Rebecca Ries of Lincoln; his siblings, Betti Troshynski (Jim) of Atkinson, Bonnie Brown of Lincoln, Carol Ries (Everett), Jack Ries (Kathy) of Shoreview, MN and Jim Ries (Lois) of Canby, MN; and his mother-in-law Zoe Claussen of Atkinson. He is also survived by his 23 grandchildren, extended family, countless friends and neighbors, and Olaf, his shop cat.

Jerald Johnson wrote a sympathy message

“My sincere condolences to you all. I just met Larry last spring and he was so kind to allow me on the farm to try to harvest a turkey. I remember grandchildren were visiting and he was loving that. Again my sympathies go out to you and prayers go up for you. Jerry Johnson Ankeny, Iowa”
