Kay was born on March 12, 1938, in Gothenburg, NE, to Bernhard and Mable Jobman. She attended country school through 8th grade and continued her education at Gothenburg High School, graduating in 1955. She was confirmed in her faith at Zion Lutheran Church, Gothenburg.

She married Lowell Schmeekle in October 1957. To this union two children were born, Rita Lynn and Russell Lee. Lowell passed away in 1965.

Kay enrolled in beauty school in Holdrege and later opened Kay's Kut and Kurl, in Elwood, NE, in 1966. While attending Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Kay met David Anderson. They were married at Zion Lutheran Church, Gothenburg. The couple lived in Holdrege and later Amherst. To this union were born Rogene Kay and Robin Dawn. Kay and family attended Trinity Lutheran Church of Amherst.

She had secretarial and bookkeeping jobs, the longest being secretary of Amherst Public School. She was like a second mom to all of the students.

Kay led a life of service, being actively involved in church, community, and civic organizations. Kay loved to quilt, craft, do crossword puzzles, and spend time with family and grandchildren.

Kay used her talents to make numerous honor quilts for veterans. Many others were blessed to have a blanket or quilt made with love by "Grandma Kay".
