Myrtle A Sampson Obituary
Myrtle Adelia Johnson was born on March 7, 1927 at home in rural Deering, North Dakota to Arthur W. and Mabel M. (Latendresse) Johnson. She died on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at the age of 95 years at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, North Dakota.
Myrtle's family moved from the Deering area to Northwest of Granville in 1929. She was the oldest of their 12 children. She began her education at a country school for 8 years before going to Granville High School, where she graduated from in 1945. While she was going to high school, she worked for people in Granville to pay for her schooling and housing. On November 25, 1946, she was united in marriage to Samuel K. Sampson. They lived in Upham for one year then moved to the Sampson farm west of Upham, where they raised their five children, Doris, Jim, Marilyn, Gloria and Melinda. While living on the farm, Myrtle not only took care of their household, helped on the farm with the animals and garden, she also worked for others doing housework and painting. There wasn't any project she was scared to tackle.
Samuel and Myrtle bought the hardware store in May 1973 and moved into Upham. They operated the store until September 1986. Samuel died in 1990. Myrtle moved to an apartment in Towner, August 2009 and finally to the Haaland Home in Rugby in February 2020. She is a member of the New Hope Church and American Legion Auxiliary (63 years) in Upham. She enjoyed doing puzzles, playing cards, bingo, quilting, going to the casino, carpentry and sewing clothing in her younger years and she loved spending time with her family and friends, whom she loved dearly. She was proud of her family, lived a wonderful 95 years and will be missed.
Myrtle is survived by her son, Jim of Seattle, WA; daughters, Doris Holen of Upham, Marilyn (Harvey) Sveund of Towner and Melinda (Robert) Hamel of Fargo; grandsons, Harlyn and Shannon Sveund; granddaughters, Sheila (Kent) Brown, Tina Maghakian and Suzanne Hamel; great grandchildren, Eli (Jen) Peters, Hallie Brown, Samantha Mann, Taylor Mann, Piper Mann, Colleen (Steven) Klamm, Samuel Sveund, Jacob Bracken, Isabella Bergman and Lily Hamel; great great grandchildren, Lillian Peters, Miles Klamm and Spencer Klamm; brothers, Earling Johnson of Dickinson, Vernon (Delores) Johnson of Monterrey, TN and Marlyn (Katie) Johnson of Arvada, CO; sisters, Marcella Ackerman of Bismarck, Darlene (Fred) Nix of Casper, WY and Carol (Robert) Mulholland of Mesquite, NV; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Johnson, Mitzi Johnson and Evelyn Schell; several nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel; daughter, Gloria Sampson; granddaughters, Marcia Holen and Danielle Radke; sister, Arlyss (Vernon) Thelan; brothers, Cleo Johnson, Myron (Joyce) Johnson, Leroy (Edith) Johnson and Ronald Johnson; brothers-in-law, Lawrence Ackerman, Chandler Sampson and Harold Kutt; sisters-in-law, Agnes Schell, Annie Otto and Jean Johnson and her parents.
