Marsha Ann Peterson Obituary
Marsha Anne Peterson, age 69 of Turtle Lake, ND passed away from Lung Cancer on May 22, 2021 at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison, ND, with her granddaughter, JyliAnne, holding her hand.
Marsha was born on September 24, 1951 to Loyal and Gretta "Gertie" (Wadholm) Hornaday on the family farm near Parshall, ND. She was one of ten children. She later moved into Parshall with her family and attended school there, then later obtained her GED. She made many lasting friends while at school, to include Linda (Olmstead) Ruud and Shelley (Howen) LeBar.
Marsha married Virgil Peterson of Ryder, ND on May 13, 1965. The lived in Minot, ND and welcomed a son, Jesse, on December 14, 1969. They soon moved to areas such as Portland OR, Denver, CO, and Chicago, IL to find work. While in Chicago, the couple welcomed a daughter, Desiree, on October 11, 1971. Marsha soon grew homesick for North Dakota, and the family moved back to Minot, ND for a short time and eventually settled on a farmstead near New Town, ND that overlooked Van Hook Arm of Lake Sakawea. While there, they welcomed a second son, Shawn, on August 28, 1979. Marsha spent many hours fishing, hunting, and riding snowmobile with family.
Marsha went to work as a nursing assistant at the New Town Nursing Home in 1975, which started her long career as a Certified Nursing Assistant and eventually a Certified Medication Aide. Virgil became ill in 1982 and the family moved off the farm to Minot, ND. Marsha soon went to work as a CNA at Trinity Nursing Home. After Desiree graduated from High School in 1990, Marsha, Virgil, and Shawn moved to Landa, ND. Marsha then went to work as a CNA at the Westhope Nursing Home in Westhope, ND. Virgil passed away suddenly in June 1992, prompting Marsha and Shawn to move from Landa to Velva, ND. She then worked at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva, ND until moving to Turtle Lake, ND in 1999 and started work as a CNA and eventually a CMA at the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood, ND until her retirement. Marsha made many friends while working at the multiple nursing homes, with the most special being Karmin Wold.
Marsha enjoyed spending time outside, especially fishing and working with her lawn and plants. She loved crafts, such as crocheting afghans and doilies for family and friends. She loved attending rummage sales with her sisters, Yvonne and Fern, competing for the best deals. She also loved to bake, with her favorites being buns, cookies, Scotch-a-roo bars, fruit cake, and caramel rolls for family, especially her grandchildren, Jake, Jared, and JyliAnne, step grand-daughter, Kayla, "adopted" grandson, Trevor, and former son-in-law, Delvin.
Marsha also loved spending time playing cards with her friends and family. Her favorites were Whist, Skip-Bo, and Hand & Foot. She looked forward to playing cards and fishing in heaven with sister, Yvonne and husband, Virgil.
Marsha is survived by her sons, Jesse Peterson (Kyla), Turtle Lake, ND, and Shawn Peterson (Nick), Grand Forks, ND, and her daughter, Desiree Desjardins (Loren), Garrison, ND. She was blessed with grandchildren, to include Jakob Kasprowicz, Butte, ND, Jared Striha, Butte, ND, and JyliAnne Striha, Garrison, ND. She also welcomed step-granddaughter, Kayla Desjardins, Mohall, ND, "Adopted" daughter, Emily Kizima, Casselton, ND, and "Adopted" grandson, Trevor Ferguson, Turtle Lake, ND. Surviving Brothers include Lynn (Mavis) Hornaday, Minot, ND, "favorite brother" Forrest Hornaday, Scappoose, OR, and Rick (Wanda) Hornaday, Minot, ND. Surviving Sisters include Sharon Hornaday, Portland, OR, Fern Skarphol (Harlen), Ryder, ND, and Lauren Ruland (Jim), Geneva, OH. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, with special mention of Marty Peterson, Rocky Norton, Kristi Moe and Shannon Schoenwald.
Marsha was preceeded in death by her Husband, Virgil Peterson; Parents, Loyal and Gertie Hornaday; Sisters, Bonnie Hornaday, Carol Norton, and Yvonne Olson; Sisters-in-law, Yvonne Peterson and Marcia Waters; Brothers-in-law, Larry Peterson, Wayne Peterson and Evan Peterson; Nephews, Matthew Ruland, Kelly Norton, Patrick Riley, Lane Hornaday, Ross Heinz; Nieces, Kathy Barry, Kyanne Olson, and Keri Edwards.
Cremation has already taken place and a small memorial ceremony is planned for the summer.
