He was predeceased by: his wife Elaine (Schmalz); his daughter Joni; his parents, Frank Buresh and Rose Buresh (Steffan); and his siblings, Robert Buresh, Albert Buresh and Darlene Andres (Roger).
He is survived by: his children, Shelley B. Tofte, Lori Jahraus (Mark), John Buresh (Laurie), Jeff Buresh (Tammy) and Dan Buresh; his siblings, Bernard (Dorothy) and Margaret Heiser (Don); his grandchildren, Eric Tofte (Kelly), Emily Nestaval (Jared), Ellery Lystad (Chad), Tim Jahraus (Brittany), Elizabeth DePinto (Shane), Paul Jahraus (Angela), Alex Buresh (Heather), Anna Buresh, Davis Buresh, Alia Buresh and Fred Buresh; and his great grandchildren, Estella Tofte, Evan Tofte, Brody Tofte, Brecken Tofte, Eddie Nestaval, Eva Nestaval, Everett Lystad, Blair DePinto, Luke Jahraus, Lillian Jahraus, Jack Buresh, Gordon Buresh and Liam Buresh-Strehlo. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
John was an active member in the North Dakota Mule Deer Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, the Benevolent Order of the Elks, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
