He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter P. Schmaltz and Mary Schmaltz (Keller); his sisters-in-law, Karen Duchscherer and Loretta Schmaltz; his nephew Kurt Hilzendager; and his great-nephew Sean Muffenbier.
He is survived by: his wife Lorraine Barbara Heilman; his children, Michael Schmaltz (Tammy), Lori Wangler (John) and Myron Schmaltz (Stephanie); his grandchildren, Morgan Thompson (Dylan), Kyle Schmaltz (Katelyn), Danielle, Erik, Jenna Wangler, Cory, Ryan, Sara and Luke Schmaltz; his great grandchildren, Gryphen Leier-Wangler, Harper and Abel Thompson; and his siblings, Ken, Don (Doris), Melvin Schmaltz (MaryJane), Carol Miller (Darroll), Diane Thingvold (Dennis), Helen Hilzendager (Duane) and Bernice Axtman (Cletus). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be made in honor/memory of Leonard to the Heart of America Hospice Services or the Rugby Emergency Ambulance Service.
