He was predeceased by: his parents, Morris Smestad and Marles Smestad (Harstad); and his wife Beverly Karlsbroten. He is survived by: his children, Sara Timm (Kevin) of Minot, Jason Smestad (Kasey) of Minot and Joshua Smestad (Ashley) of Surrey; his grandchildren, Tiara, Andrew, Emma Conrey, Kaesin Timm, Avery, Kinsley and Hanna Smestad; and his siblings, Lois Zahn of Surrey, Linda Newman (Del) of Lemmon, Mary Lingelbach (Tim) of Riverdale, LeRoy Smestad (Sherri) of Minot, Ron Smestad of Minot and Karen Carter (Ross) of Sherwood. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
