He was predeceased by: his wife Odiela Mertz; his siblings, Luella Anderson, Mervin, Larry and Melvin; and his siblings-in-law, Melita Rose Mertz, Glennis Muscha, Whelan Mertz, Allen Mertz, Arlin Mertz and Ben Muscha.
He is survived by: his children, LaVern (Sherry) of McClusky, ND, Sheryl Shotnokoff (Rocky) of Idaho Falls, ID, Steven (Carol) of Sandy, UT, Elliot (Stephany) of Plano, TX, Virgil (Julie) of McClusky, ND and Lynette Boehm (Norman) of McClusky, ND; his brother Allan (Margie); his siblings-in-law, Michele Laib Selleck of Phoenix, AZ, Lois Mertz of Bismarck, ND, Shirley Mertz of Minot, ND, Marlene Grate of Bismarck, ND, Ronald Mertz (Loretta), William Mertz (Carol), David Mertz (Sharon), Curtis Mertz (Linda), Clarence Mertz (Nancy) of Bismarck, ND and Gary Mertz (Marilyn) of Mandan, ND.; and his friend Tom Giese. He is also survived by many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
