He was predeceased by: his wife Vera; his son-in-law Paul Gassman of Marshalltown, IA; his sisters, Elsie Cone of Rufus, OR and Leona Adermann of Gwinner, ND; and his parents, Reinhold Bartell and Amy Bartell.
He is survived by: his children, William Bartell (Lisa) of Sioux Falls, SD, Crystal Gassman of Marshalltown, IA and Christopher Bartell (Melissa) of Grand Prairie, TX; and his siblings, Alice Bartell of Gwinner, ND, Janet VanBruggen (Jerry) of Jamestown, ND and George Bartell of Dayton, OH.. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren (Robert, Daniel, Erin, Katherine, Caroline); 6 great-grandchildren.
